BioRN Cluster

The Biotech Cluster Rhine-Neckar (BioRN) defines itself as a biotechnology cluster with biotech companies that are located within a radius of about 30 km. Instead of conforming to county or state boundaries, the cluster corresponds to a region that has evolved historically. The largest accumulation of companies is in close proximity to the institutions of academic research and training.

In addition to the University of Heidelberg and the  Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, research institutes such as the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and clinical institutes such as Heidelberg University Hospital and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), about 60 small and medium-sized biotech companies belong to the cluster. Furthermore, the enterprises Roche (Mannheim), Merck Serono (Darmstadt), and Abbott (Ludwigshafen) are strong partners.

Regional politics, regional associations, service providers and, not least, investors in the life sciences play a decisive role in the development of the cluster. The cities of Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Ludwigshafen actively support the BioRN Cluster as well.

In September 2008, the BioRegion Rhine-Neckar won the Leading-Edge Cluster Competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research  (BMBF). With this award the location became the Leading-Edge Cluster for "Cell-Based and Molecular Medicine".

The five collaborative projects of the BioRN Cluster

Personalized medicine in the field of cancer research is the primary focus of the BioRN leading-edge cluster »Cell-based & Molecular Medicine«. Medications, diagnostic agents, and technology platforms are brought here to industrial maturity. All together there are five collaborative projects united in the BioRN Leading-Edge Cluster; the BioRN Academy is one of the collaborative projects.
